Bernard "Buddy" Rich is an American conductor and jazz drummer. He is considered one of the most influential drummers of all time. Rich was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He discovered his passion for jazz as a child and started playing drums at the age of 2. He started playing jazz in 1937, working with artists such as Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie, and Harry James. From 1942 to 1944, Rich served in the United States Marine Corps. From 1945 to 1948, he conducted the Buddy Rich Orchestra. In 1966 he recorded a large group style remix of songs from West Side Story. He enjoyed lasting success in 1966 with the founding of the Buddy Rich Big Band, also known as the Buddy Rich Band and the Big Machine Band. Rich is known for his skillful technique, strength and speed. He is a proponent of the traditional grip, although he sometimes uses the matchstick grip when playing the cone.
